Birmingham Decent Homes Project
Birmingham
Under the current Government Legislation by 2010 95% of all social housing in the UK needs to be of a minimum standard. This legislation has been termed ‘Decent Homes' and the criteria by which this is defined has 4 key components :-
- Fitness for habitation
- Disrepair
- Modern Facilities
- A Reasonable degree of thermal comfort
Throughout the UK each council has undertaken a variety of projects to improve their social housing stock, several of the projects we are currently involved with include the following areas :-
Birmingham
Birmingham City Council has over 12,000 properties which were built using non traditional construction methods. A majority of these properties were built with a cavity wall composed of 50mm concrete block inner and outer skin tied with one of the blocks turned on end between the courses. Over the course of the years this block has split leading to the inner skin buckling inwards and the outer skin outwards. In order to rectify this situation Birmingham City Council in conjunction with Curtains Stuctural engineers and Structherm have developed a system of anchoring Structherms structural external wall insulation system fixed to wall ties to hold the inner skin in place whilst corseting the outer face of the building with the Structherm structural panel.
Transcast are currently in the 3rd year of a planned 5 year project working in partnership with Thomas Vale Construction and the City Council and their tenents.
The finish being applied to the system replicates the original finish to the buildings by use of Structherms Settef Acrylic render finish and Macerend Brick effect render.
